Mass dampers on an FM-A: one set, three jobs

Light at the front, heavier at the back: every weight on this car comes out of one set, 15459.

15459, the AR chassis side mass damper set, comes with two kinds of brass weight: a bowl (3.4 g) and a cylinder (4.2 g), two of each. Each one sits loose on its screw, so when the car lifts at a jump it trails behind, then lands on the plate and kills the bounce.

This car puts the light bowls at the front, on 30 mm countersunk screws fitted from under the plates so the heads sit flush. The heavier cylinders go on the rear brake stay, and the sides carry two bowls each, stacked and wrapped in tape so they move as one weight. That's six bowls and two cylinders: three sets of 15459.

The other shapes

  • Bowl, 15459: 3.4 g. Front here; two taped per side.
  • Cylinder, 15459: 4.2 g. Rear brake stay here.
  • Standard dome, 15392: 4.7 g. A step heavier.
  • Heavy, 15401: 8.8 g. The heaviest round weight.

The B-MAX ruling

A damper may move the way it is designed to, up and down its screw, but it must be fixed to the car or to a plate that is fixed. Nothing may hang into the zone between the axles: dampers belong on the front and rear plates and the side stays, never between the wheels.

This is one page of 48. The book goes part by part through the whole car: the plates, the rollers, the brakes, the wheels and tyres, the shafts, the hardware, each with its drawing, its item number, its price and the rule it answers to.
